Check 5: HTTPS and forms. Type your website URL into a browser. Does it show a padlock icon (HTTPS) or “Not Secure”? If Not Secure, your website is invisible to modern SEO and blocked from processing forms in Chrome. 1. HTTPS. If your site is not on HTTPS, nothing else matters. Get an SSL certificate installed (Let’s Encrypt is free via most hosts) and force all traffic to https:// before doing any other SEO work.
2. Mobile responsiveness. If the site is not mobile-responsive, no amount of on-page work will save it. This may mean a full theme change on WordPress, a template rebuild on Wix or Squarespace, or a decision to move platforms entirely.
3. Core Web Vitals. Once HTTPS and mobile are sorted, tackle the page-experience metrics. LCP is usually driven by unoptimised hero images (fix with WebP format and responsive sizing). INP is usually driven by third-party scripts loading synchronously (defer them). CLS is usually driven by images or ads without declared dimensions (declared width and height).
4. Site speed generally. Compress images (WebP under 200KB for hero images, under 100KB for content images). Use a content delivery network (Cloudflare has a functional free tier). Minify CSS and JavaScript. Remove unused plugins and scripts. Realistic target: home page and course pages under 3 seconds fully loaded on mobile 4G.
5. URL structure. Short, descriptive, qualification-code-inclusive where possible. Good: /course/chc33021-certificate-3-individual-support/. Bad: /pages/product-1234?category=courses. Restructuring URLs on an existing site requires careful 301 redirect mapping to preserve existing rankings, so this is a controlled project not a casual change.
6. XML sitemap. Submit an XML sitemap through Search Console. Most CMS platforms generate one automatically; verify it exists at /sitemap.xml and that it includes only pages you want indexed. Exclude thank-you pages, admin URLs, and any test or staging content.
7. Schema markup. Covered as its own section below because the priority order within schema also matters.
Course Page Structure: Where Most Money Is Lost

Title tag: “{Qualification Name} ({Code}) | {Delivery Mode} | {RTO Name}”. Example: “Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021) | Online & Brisbane | [RTO Name]”.
H1: The exact qualification title as it appears on training.gov.au. Do not paraphrase. Do not add marketing language. Google matches queries against this specific string.
Above-fold summary block: Five data points visible before any scroll on both desktop and mobile: duration, delivery mode, fee, entry requirements, USI requirement. Prospective students look for these five specific pieces of information first, and pages that surface them without a scroll convert dramatically better than pages that bury them under marketing copy.
Body content sections in order: Course overview, units of competency (from training.gov.au, linked back to it), delivery options in detail, pricing and payment options, entry requirements and RPL pathways, assessment overview, funding eligibility, career outcomes with realistic language, enquiry call to action.
FAQ section: Genuine questions prospective students actually ask about this qualification. Marked up with FAQPage schema (covered in the schema section below).
Related qualifications: Internal links to two or three related course pages in your specialisation. Helps Google understand your topical cluster and gives prospective students a natural next step.

Schema Markup for RTO Websites (In Order of Priority)
Schema markup is structured data that helps search engines understand what your content is about. RTO websites need specific schema types in a specific order of priority. Adding schema types you do not need is a common misuse that can trigger warnings in Search Console.
Priority 1: Organization schema. Site-wide, typically in the site head or footer. Includes your RTO name, logo, website URL, contact information, physical address, and social profile links (sameAs). This is the foundational identity signal for your entire domain.
Priority 2: Course schema. On every course page. Includes the qualification name, description, provider (linked to your Organization schema), and educational credential. Google supports Course structured data for course listings, and pages with proper implementation are eligible for enhanced search features.
Priority 3: BreadcrumbList schema. Site-wide, marking up your breadcrumb navigation. Helps Google understand site structure and produces a breadcrumb display in search results.
Priority 4: Educational Occupational Program schema. On qualification-focused pages. Includes program type, occupational category, time to complete, and educational credential awarded. More specific than the Course schema for AQF qualifications.
Priority 5: LocalBusiness schema. Only if you have a physical campus. One instance per location on the corresponding campus page.
Priority 6: FAQPage schema. Only on pages with genuine FAQ sections. Do not add FAQPage schema to pages that do not have visible FAQ content; Google treats this as manipulation and can penalise the whole page.
Priority 7: Review or AggregateRating schema. Only if you have legitimate published reviews on the specific page. Faked review counts or star ratings are worse than none. Google is increasingly effective at detecting fake review markup and penalises accounts that use it.
Implementing the AI Overviews Layer

Person schema for content authors. Every named author on your site should have a Person schema profile including name, jobTitle, worksFor (linked to your Organization schema), knowsAbout (topics they have genuine expertise in), and sameAs links to their LinkedIn profile and other public professional profiles. This makes the author legible to AI models as a real, verifiable expert rather than a generic byline.
Organization schema with linked entities. Your Organization schema should include not just the basics but also sameAs links to your training.gov.au listing, ASQA registration page (or state regulator equivalent), industry association memberships, and social profiles. Each sameAs link is a signal that connects your organisation to other verified sources.
Direct-answer structure at the top of every content page. AI answer engines cite content that starts with a clear, direct answer to the specific question the page addresses. If the answer is buried three paragraphs down, the AI cannot easily extract it. The Quick Answer box at the top of this guide is that structure in practice: a concise, complete summary that stands as a self-contained answer if quoted.
Named-entity density. AI models identify authority by matching named entities in the content against their knowledge graphs. Wherever you can, name the specific entity rather than the generic term. “ASQA” is not “the regulator.” “training.gov.au” not “the national register.” “Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021)” not an “aged care course.” Named entities linked to the corresponding authoritative source (asqa.gov.au, training.gov.au, ncver.edu.au) are stronger signals than named entities standing alone.
Machine-readable trust markers. Every page should have visible RTO code, ASQA registration status, physical address, and ABN. Every author should have a linked profile. Every claim that can be sourced should be sourced. These are trust signals for human readers and for AI models simultaneously.

The training.gov.au Integration Layer
The training.gov.au listing for your RTO is public, sits on a .gov.au domain with domain authority most private RTOs cannot match, and functions as a trust source Google references. RTOs that keep their website content aligned with their training.gov.au listing rank more reliably than RTOs where the two diverge.
Four alignments to check:
Qualification codes match current versions. Every qualification code on your course pages should be the current version on training.gov.au, not a superseded version. Superseded qualifications are covered separately in the next section.
Qualification titles match exactly. Word for word. If training.gov.au says “Certificate III in Individual Support,” your course page H1 should say exactly that. Not “Cert III in Aged Care” or “Individual Support Certificate 3.” Exact match matters for both keyword ranking and trust signals.
Contact information is identical across surfaces. Your business name, RTO code, phone number, email, and primary address on your website must match your training.gov.au listing exactly. NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone) is a fundamental local SEO signal, and any inconsistency confuses both Google and prospective students verifying your legitimacy.
Your training.gov.au listing links to your primary domain. Not a landing page. Not a subdomain. Not a redirect chain. Your main website URL, exactly. If it is currently pointing somewhere else, contact ASQA to update it.

Handling Superseded Qualifications Without Breaking SEO
Every RTO deals with this eventually. A qualification you deliver is superseded by a new code on training.gov.au. Certificate III in Aged Care becomes CHC33015 and becomes CHC33021. If you handle the transition badly, your ranking course pages become SEO poison, and the incoming replacement pages start from zero.
The correct sequence:
Step 1: Create the new course page. Full course page for the current qualification code, following the structure covered above. Publish under a new URL that includes the current code: /course/chc33021-certificate-3-individual-support/.
Step 2: 301 redirect the old URL to the new one. This passes most of the old page’s ranking authority to the new page. Do not delete the old page; do not leave it live as an orphan; 301 redirect it.
Step 3: Update your internal links. Every internal link across your site that pointed to the old URL should now point to the new one. Do not rely on the 301 to carry the load; internal links to the current URL are stronger.
Step 4: Update the H1 and title on the new page. The new qualification title exactly as it appears on training.gov.au. New code in the URL, title, and body.
Step 5: Update your training.gov.au listing scope. If the superseded qualification is still in your scope, add the new qualification and remove the old one when your registration expires or is transitioned. This is an ASQA process, not a website process, but the two need to align.
Step 6: Notify Google via Search Console. Submit the updated XML sitemap. The 301 redirects will do most of the work automatically, but a fresh sitemap submission accelerates re-indexing.
Done correctly, this transition preserves most of your existing ranking momentum and prevents the “we lost all our aged care traffic when the qualification changed” problem that catches RTOs constantly.
Mobile Experience for RTO Course Browsers
Mobile experience for RTOs is not the same as mobile experience for e-commerce or news sites. RTO course-page traffic has specific patterns worth designing for.
The above-fold summary block matters more on mobile than on desktop. On desktop, a prospective student can scan the page quickly for the five key data points. On mobile, they scroll. If duration, delivery mode, fee, entry requirements, and USI are not visible without scrolling, most mobile visitors will bounce before finding them.
Touch targets must be thumb-friendly. Buttons, form fields, and phone numbers should be at least 48 pixels tall and wide, with adequate spacing so a thumb does not accidentally tap the wrong element. Small text links close together are a mobile conversion killer.
Phone numbers must be tapped to call. Wrap phone numbers in tel: links so tapping opens the phone app pre-populated. A significant share of RTO enquiries come from phone calls initiated on mobile, and requiring the visitor to copy the number by hand loses many of them.
Enquiry forms must be short. A ten-field enquiry form that works on desktop will fail on mobile. Get name, email, phone, qualification interest, then get out. Additional questions can be asked in the follow-up call.
No horizontal scroll ever. Any page requiring horizontal scrolling on mobile is broken. Check every page and every screen size.
Avoid autoplay video, especially on cellular. Care sector prospective students, who are a large share of RTO mobile traffic, are often on limited data plans. Autoplay video that consumes their data before they have decided to watch generates active resentment.
The Trust Signal Layer

- RTO code prominently displayed. Footer of every page, plus repeated on every course page. Format: “RTO Code: 12345”.
- ASQA registration status is linked to your training.gov.au listing. Not just claimed on your site, but linked to the authoritative source.
- Named trainer profiles with real credentials. Not stock photos. Not “our team” placeholder pages. Individual profiles for the actual people delivering the training, with their industry experience and qualifications listed.
- Physical address in the footer. Even if you deliver mostly online, an address establishes legitimacy.
- ABN in the footer.
- Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and refund policy pages that actually exist and reflect your real business.
- Legitimate testimonials with real attribution. First name, initial of last name, qualification completed, year. Not “S. from Melbourne.”
Trust signals do not directly rank pages. They lift the E-E-A-T signal that determines whether your pages are eligible for top rankings in the first place. An RTO with weak trust signals is competing with one hand tied.
When to Rebuild vs When to Patch
An honest section, because this is a decision most agencies push toward rebuilding for commercial reasons rather than genuine site needs. Patch is usually the right answer.
Patch is right when:
- The site is already HTTPS
- The site is already mobile-responsive (even if not beautifully so)
- Course pages exist and can be edited
- The platform allows SEO fundamentals (title tags, meta descriptions, custom URLs, schema)
- The compliance surface can be updated
Most RTO websites fall in this category. The site is not perfect, but the bones are sound; four weeks of focused work produce measurable improvement without the disruption of a full rebuild.
Rebuild is right when:
- The site is not on HTTPS, and the current platform cannot be moved to HTTPS
- The site is not mobile-responsive and cannot be made responsive without a theme change
- The platform is a proprietary RTO CMS that blocks basic SEO controls
- The site is a product-catalogue style with no individual course pages
- The site is a 2015-era WordPress theme with 40+ plugins, most broken
- The compliance surface is fundamentally non-compliant and easier to rebuild than remediate

Most RTO-scale operations do not need enterprise SEO tools. The stack that works:
- Google Search Console. Free, mandatory. If you use nothing else, use this. Shows what you rank for, what queries drive impressions, technical errors, indexing status.
- Google PageSpeed Insights. Free. Core Web Vitals and page speed diagnostics.
- Google Analytics 4. Free. Traffic, source attribution, conversion tracking.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free version). Free for up to 500 URLs. Site crawler that finds broken links, missing metadata, and structural problems. Adequate for most RTO websites.
- SERanking or Semrush free tier. $30-100 per month at the paid tiers; both free tiers cover basic keyword tracking. Adequate for RTO-scale operations. Ubersuggest is no longer recommended as it has degraded significantly.
Enterprise tools (Ahrefs, Semrush at full tier, Moz Pro) are worth it only when SEO spend across the account exceeds roughly $5,000 per month total. Below that, the free and low-cost tools cover the same ground for the work an RTO actually needs to do.
Realistic Timeline for Technical Fixes
Technical SEO produces measurable improvement faster than content SEO because most of the work is one-time fixes. Realistic sequence for a mid-sized RTO:
Week 1: Search Console and Analytics setup and verification. Initial audit complete.
Weeks 2-4: HTTPS if needed, mobile responsiveness fixes, Core Web Vitals fixes, XML sitemap submission.
Weeks 4-8: Course page rebuilds against the structure covered above. Two to three qualifications per week if focused.
Weeks 8-12: Schema markup implementation, AI Overviews layer implementation, training.gov.au alignment, superseded qualification handling.
Months 3-6: Results become measurable in Search Console. First long-tail rankings appear. Impressions grow steadily.
